Soft Light at Traigh Niosaboist

Soft Light at Traigh Niosaboist - The Outer Hebrides
May 2009

This location is near the campsite at Horgabost on the Isle of Harris and offers an excellent view across the Sound of Taransay. The image was taken in the evening in May.

I had left the hotel hoping for a few breaks in the cloud in order to catch a colourful sunset, when I reached the shore I was immediately drawn to this little stream which had formed a network of peaty deposits in the sand and was branching out towards me.

The dark colours in the stream contrasted well with the damp sand. The tide was retreating at this point and the soft evening light revealed a beautiful range of aqua tones in the shallows ahead.

I composed this image to emphasise the branches of the stream and to lead the viewer towards the water and beyond. There are some bold shapes and curves presented in this frame throughout. Finally I feel the sweeping cloud line almost mirrors the landscape of Taransay ahead, while simultaneously giving the island a little 'breathing space' in the frame.

One of my favourites from Harris.
